Keystone Farm...get to know us. |
|||
Larry Russell, a sixth generation farmer, was brought up on a northeast Pennsylvania dairy and maple syrup farm. Settled in 1796 by Daniel Russell, the farm is located in Bradford County near the town of Rome. By the age of 12 Larry loved to farm and knew it would be his lifelong career choice. Chores where done before school, getting up to milk cows at 4 a.m. The farm continued to be a success under Larry's leadership. He married Phylann Nemeth in the fall of 1990, and together continued to live on the farm. In the fall of 1996, Larry was diagnosed with Lymphoma and was treated for his cancer in Rochester, New York. Due to the extensive treatment, the decision was made to sell the dairy herd. Knowing they would never be able to dairy farm again, Phylann began researching different avenues of farming and agriculture. In 1997 Phylann started Keystone Farm using organic, sustainable farming practices. Together, Phylann and Larry, now in remission from his cancer, raise small animals such as chickens, pigs, and sheep and grow fruits and vegetables. Always insistent on organic farm methods to ensure the highest quality goods, they began working as a community supported agriculture. Delivering the bounty brought forth from the farm to the open farm market in Philadelphia Pennsylvania each weekend. |
